Cobh Day Trip (Sept. 15, 2019)

A group of us international students decided to head down to the coast for the day to see Cobh. A very pretty town nestled in to the side of the harbor, Cobh is rich in history. While Kinsale was significant in military endeavors, Cobh’s history is more about those emigrating from Ireland to other parts of the world.

Cobh was strategically located on the transatlantic route, which turned a small little fishing village in to a bustling city. Because of this, Cobh would usually be the last bit of Ireland people would see before moving across the world. The city was also the point from which convicts would be involuntarily sent to Australia. The Titanic’s final city it visited before crashing in to the iceberg and sinking was Cobh. The town is still hosts a luxury cruise port.

We walked from the train station at one end of the city, down the water front, to the Titanic memorial park at the other end of the city. We also walked around St. Colman’s Cathedral, which spire reaches 90m, one of the tallest in the country. The cathedral is perched high above the harbor, with spectacular views of the water and the rest of the city.

The cathedral is also right next to the deck of cards, a row of colorful houses running up a hill. It’s not hard to see why the this street is one of the most photographed streets in Ireland.

We ended the day with a delicious lunch by the water, and a lie down in a beautiful garden with views of the sea. All together a wonderful day spent with friends.
